Building blocks of the single market

Conformity assessment

A manufacturer can only place a product on the EU market when it meets all the applicable requirements. The conformity assessment procedure is carried out before the product can be sold. The Commission’s main objective is to help ensure that unsafe or non-compliant products do not reach the market.

Accreditation of conformity assessment bodies

Accreditation is the last level of public control in the European conformity assessment system. It is designed to ensure that conformity assessment bodies (e.g. laboratories, inspection or certification bodies) have the technical capacity to perform their duties.

Notified bodies

A notified body is an organisation designated by an EU country to assess the conformity of certain products before being placed on the market. These bodies carry out tasks related to conformity assessment procedures set out in the applicable legislation, when a third party is required.

Information and Communication System on Market Surveillance (ICSMS)
